Most of those early videos were low-budget, with the performers standing on a stage singing. Music videos had been around for a few years in the U.K., but not in the U.S., when MTV debuted in 1981. However, they were still relatively unknown in America – until a new cable channel changed the course of music history. Their inaugural, self-titled album did well in their native country. Heavily influenced by artists such as David Bowie, The Beatles, Sex Pistols and Chic, the young band rode the wave of popularity of the New Romantic movement in the U.K., complete with ruffle shirts and heavy makeup. The record is almost near completion and the band is thankful for the time it took to create. But we kind of came back with fresh ears and fresh energy,” they explained. We had to break in the middle of the record which was very unusual for us. And then the pandemic came along we all had to go to isolation. “I mean it’s been a bit of a journey because we started back in 2018 and we kind of thought we would nearly finish with this record. “It’s quite hard to think that those machines have come that far now that they can actually make a video on their own,” they all agreed. But it made remarkable decisions because it’s programmed in a very different way than normal computers the things we use every day are very much mathematical this computer is programmed in the way that our brain thinks. It had the lyrics to the song, had lots of photographs of the band, some history about the band, the song itself. “It obviously it was fed with information by humans. “The video itself is quite extraordinary when you think that it was made by a machine,” they continued. It is most likely the first music video in history to film that way. The craziest part of the creative process was the fact that the music video was shot entirely by AI. “I think it’s coming out in a time in the world where we’re all looking forward to a little more normality.” Duran Duran’s History-Making New Music Video ![]() about wanting to be seen wanting to be heard and coming back out of the dark again,” they revealed. “It’s just a song that we wrote pre-pandemic but interestingly I think that the lyric of the song particularly speaks to everybody who’s been through what we’ve been through in the world now.
